Our Latest Family Portrait

David came along with us to Josiah's violin lessons today (private lesson and group lesson). He likes to listen and watch for a while; and then when the lesson ceases to capture his attention, he writes on the pad of paper I take along to make notes on. During the group lesson this evening, I handed him the paper and a pen and asked him to draw a picture of our family. This is what he drew:
At first, he drew the faces inside the rectangle. I assumed that was showing all of us sitting around the table--wrong assumption. It wasn't until I asked him to label all of us and he explained that the name signs were hanging from nails on the wall that I realized that the faces in the rectangle were also part of a portrait hanging on the wall. To clarify that, he drew a nail and string for that rectangle, too. He's helpful like that.

I'm sure a psychologist could take this picture and analyze it to determine what the family dynamics are in our household and how David feels about his place in the family. Blah, blah, blah... I'm not a psychologist, but I am a homeschool teacher and the one thing I notice is that David still writes "J' backwards. We'll have to work on that.

I surely love having all these faces in my family!

cute! Even Trinity writes "J" backwards a lot. I don't make a huge deal about it yet but just gently remind her when I notice her do it while she is writing (if it is in a finished product I don't worry about saying anything) Now she catches herself sometimes.

He drew a picture of a picture of your family. A creative twist on the typical family portrait. :-)

I just reread this post. Funny because you asked him to draw a picture of your family and that is precisely what he did!

Exactly! I didn't catch on at first, but later I realized that he took my instructions literally and did exactly what I asked. It just took me a while to realize it! :)

Davene - I have to apologize. I just realized how far behind I was on your blog. I thought it was only a week or so, but it's been nearly 2 weeks! Sorry about that - I've been on the computer fairly little lately, but didn't know I'd let so much time pass. But this little window I've had has been lovely.

I love reading about the boys, and your happy, very blessed life.

Again, Happy Valentine's Day!
