Plumbing Perils

We've been having plumbing problems for almost a week now. It started last Friday when I was doing laundry and noticed that water came up in the drains in the laundry room and the cellar when the water spun out of the washing machine. To make a long story short, the problem continued...Jeff had various ideas of what might be wrong...he tried several solutions to fix it...in the end, it was clear that we just needed to have our septic tank pumped out. So we did today.

The next time I think I have a rough job as a stay-at-home-mom, I'll just remember these guys (the fourth guy was actually down in the tank when I took this picture)...and say a fervent prayer of thanks for my job! :)
I got to share with Josiah and David the experience of watching our tank being emptied, and it led naturally to a conversation about how there are certain jobs that I'm very grateful to not have...but also very grateful that someone has them!!!
This whole experience has been an excellent reminder to not take clean running water for granted. So many (and that's an understatement) people in the world don't have access to this ever, and we feel like we are having a serious hardship if we don't have it for a few hours. We are so very blessed...

Eeeww!

But definitely a couple of things to be thankful for--for fresh water and for a great job that isn't standing in someone else's sewage.

I hate it when ordinary things go awry -- it would be so nice if the house never got dusty, plumbing never needed fixing, or gardens never needed weeding. Still, it's great there's someone out there to help. Jumps and I watched the mockumentary "Kenny" on the weekend -- it's about a portaloo operator, and was strangely intriguing. Not one for kids, but still oddly charming and interesting.

Your comment about not taking clean running water for granted touches on something that's been bouncing around in my head lately, and it's about how - how do we?- teach our children that the world they're in is privileged, and to be grateful for it.

Am SO glad your water's fixed! And you got a great picture of the boys!

Don't forget, somebody has to launder these guys clothes! I remember Mom making us hose off our clothes out in the yard to get the cow manure off (after we took them off of course) before she would wash them. Now that I am doing laundry for this household, I can't imagine how my mom put up with so much.

Oh, I am really glad your plumbing is back to normal. Life can be very inconvenient without it, especially since we are accustomed to it.
